la famille – family

Here you will find a collection of words in connection with the family. The nouns are shown with a definite article. If the definite article is not used with that noun or it does not show the gender of the noun, masculine (m) or feminine (f) letter is there. If their plural form is not usual, the plural form is also shown. The adjectives sometimes are shown with the feminine form too.

Les membres de la famille – the members of the family

The “nice” (beau, belle) relatives:

The words beau, belle help us to express in-law relatives. Relatives through adoption can also be expressed this way:

les beaux-parents (plural only) – (the husband’s or wife’s parents)
le beau-père – father-in-law / stepfather
la belle-mère – mother-in-law / stepmother
le beau-fils – son-in-law / stepson
la belle-fille – daughter-in-law / stepdaughter

le beau-frère – brother-in-law
la belle-soeur – sister-in-law

In the plural both words get the plural ending, e.g.: les beaux-pères, les belles-filles.

le filleul / la filleule – godchild

un arbre généalogique – genealogical tree, pedigree

Notre famille se compose de quatre personnes: mes parents, ma soeur et moi – Our family consists of four people: my parents, my sister and me.

la fiancée – fiancée (These two words were exactly borrowed from French!)

le (jeune) marié – groom, bridegroom (on the day of marriage)
la (jeune) mariée – bride (on the day of marriage)

(se) marier avec / épouser qun – to get married to somebody, to marry somebody

Elle s’est mariée il y a huit ans – She got married eight years ago.

être fiancé avec – to be engaged to somebody

fonder une famille – to raise a family, to start a family

J’ai assisté au mariage religieux de mon ami – I was there (I was present) at my friend’s religious wedding.

le témoin – witness

Qui sera témoin à votre mariage? – Who will be the witness at your (plural, meaning you both) wedding ceremony?

les jeunes mariés – newly weds

Les jeunes mariés sont partis en voyage de noces – The newly weds went on honeymoon.

faire bon ménage / s’entendre bien – to get on well with each other

permettre (permis) – to allow
s’inquiéter pour – to worry about

Mes parents s’inquiètent pour moi – My parents worry about me.

s’occuper bien de / prendre soin de – to look after somebody, to care for somebody

Le bon père s’occupe bien de sa famille – The good father looks after the family.

être fier (fière) de – to be proud of somebody

Nous sommes fiers de notre fils – We are proud of our son.

louer (encourager) – to praise

Je suis loué(e) par mes parents souvent – I am often praised by my parents.

Mon frère est déjà marié et il vit loin de nous, dans une autre ville – My brother is already married and lives far from us, in another town / city.

déménager – to move somewhere

Quand j’avais dix ans, nous avons déménagé – When I was ten years old, we moved.

naître (né) – to be born

Mon fils est né en 2012 – My son was born in 2012.

aller voir / rendre visit á quelqu’un – to go to see somebody, to visit somebody

Nous allons voir nos grands-parents chaque semaine – We go to see our grandparents every week.

Le corps humain consiste en trois parties principales: la tête, le tronc et les membres – The human body consists of three main parts: the head, the trunk and the limbs.

If a part of the body is used with a reflexive verb, a reflexive pronoun is used instead of a possessive pronoun. The part of the body is used with a definite article:

Je me lave les mains – I wash my hands.

La température baisse – The temperature decreases. (baisser – to decrease, to go down)
La température augmente – The temperature raises. (augmenter – to raise, to increase)

degré(s) Celsius – degrees Celsius

Il fait 20 degrés – It is 20 degrees
Il fait moins 2 degrés – It is 2 degrees below zero.

La saison – season

un hiver – winter (en hiver – in winter; hivernal – of winter)
le printemps – spring (au printemps – in spring)
un été – summer (en été – in summer; estival – of summer)
un automne – autumn (en automne – in autumn)

Hivernal and estival are used as adjectives, e.g.: froid hivernal; temps estival.

l’été (m) indien – Indian summer (warm period after summer)

fleurir (-iss-) – to bloom

Au printemps les arbres fleurissent – In spring trees bloom.

se réchauffer – to warm up

Le temps s’est réchauffé – The weather (has) warmed up.

le ciel dégagé – cloudless sky

Le vent souffle – The wind blows / The wind is blowing. (souffler – to blow)

Here you will find a lot of adjectives to describe the physical appearance (l’apparence physique) and the  personality (la personnalité). The feminine forms of the adjectives are also shown here except if it is the same as the masculine form – these have -e ending also in the masculine form. Ma soeur a un bébé, il a un an – My sister has a baby, he is one year old.
Le professeur est plus âgé que toi – The teacher / professor is older than you.

de taille moyenne – of medium height

Mon ami est de taille moyenne – My friend is of medium height.
Je mesure un mètre quatre-vingts – I am 180 centimetres tall / I measure 180 centimetres. (Attention to the numerals! 70, 80 and 90 are expressed in an unusual way!)

avoir les yeux bleus / verts / noirs / marron – to have blue / green / black / brown eyes
(The word marron cannot be used in plural here as it derives from a noun!)

Les cheveux – hair (In French this word is used in plural form. In the singular it means: le cheveu – a hair)

(When speaking about the colour of someone’s hair or eyes, the plural definite article is used: les.)

Je mesure un mètre quatre-vingt-dix – I measure 190 centimetres.
Je pèse quatre-vingts kilos – I weigh 80 kilos.

Tu as bon caractère – You are a good character.
Mon mari est plein de défauts mais je l’aime – My husband is full of bad characteristics but I love him.
Son caractère ne me plaisait jamais – I have never liked his character.
